Green Chair with Hose

Created 1985

Crayon on cotton board

Each chair has a personality, like humans. Chairs catch my attention, "Oh, look at that chair." I read them as I would a person. Something comes, though nothing is said or done.

I've never had this chair in my possession. This one belonged to a friend. When I first saw it, my eyes rested and then lingered longer. I liked its red and white cushion...it gave it that missing zip.

With the cushion there, I tear my eyes away for a peek at the grass and back to the cushion. Then a short trip out to the darkness and back. What's that hose about? And back to the cushion.

I imagined the chair without that cushion. Almost blah. But, in the absence of the cushion, those four stripes on the chair back brought in a little something...and I did stray more into the bright background, into the scribble that is grassness. And then back into the darkness. What's in there? And the hose has a story. And the hose brings us back to the chair and the four stripes in the back.
