Lace Curtain

Created 1972

Gouache on cotton board

The French window, like an ornate frame, transforms a modest view into an elegant backdrop.

This is one of the few paintings to return with me from six months studying abroad in France as a sophomore in college. The rest of my work from this time was lost in transport. I am particularly glad this one traveled with me. I was not willing to let it go in the crate with others to lighten my load while traveling. It was not quite finished.

I had discovered Impressionists Vuillard and Bonnard by then and was forcing myself to flatten and simplify without losing the light and air.
